Named one of Classic FM's Rising Stars of 2024, Laura Lootens has arrived on the classical music scene not with a quiet entrance, but with the force of a thunderstorm. Her critically acclaimed recital programme, Diabolico, is sweeping across the UK this June and if you've never been moved by a solo guitar, prepare to have your expectations completely shattered.
Gramophone describes her with the kind of language usually reserved for once in a generation artists: "fearless intensity," "pure theatre and drama," and "exceptional command of the instrument." These aren't empty superlatives. From the moment Lootens takes the stage, she creates an atmosphere that is simultaneously intimate and electric, as though the entire room is holding its breath.
The programme itself is a journey through some of the most compelling and emotionally charged repertoire the guitar world has to offer. Paganini's Grand Sonata opens proceedings with its signature blend of bravado and lyrical beauty. Rodrigo's Invocación y Danza conjures the spirit of flamenco and Spanish romance. Rochberg's Caprice Variations ventures into the modern with dazzling complexity. And then there is the centrepiece, Castelnuovo Tedesco's Capriccio Diabolico, a showstopping tour de force that pays homage to Paganini's legendary dark virtuosity. It is the kind of piece that makes audiences question whether what they are witnessing is technically possible.
Lootens began her university studies at the age of fifteen. By twenty two, she was already on the faculty of the prestigious University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. Her 2025 album Diabolico, released on Naïve, was chosen by Apple Music as one of its Albums of the Month. This season alone she has performed at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and is midway through three separate US tours.
If you've ever wanted to witness a truly exceptional artist at the height of their powers, this is your moment.
